Original Turtle Town area, before renovations.

At first, we had 1 hole leading into an Under Ground Tunnel that housed WildFlower and Okie during the winter. Also, we had only a small pond of water and 2 shrubs. The turtles ha d free rein of the complete garden area behind the gate.

When we got back from Oklahoma in 2005, we completely reconstructed the tunnels, added a second larger entrance to accommodate Tecumseh's size; he couldn't fit into the original doorway.

The renovations of Turtle Town started on March 18th, 2006. We already had a designated area for the turtles, that we fenced in for their safety, but we added a two row block wall to insure that the turtles would be kept in their own area and to stop the new hatchlings from escaping under the gate like the first two hatchlings did.

As you can see, the trees and shrubs have grown, and we have added a few turtle-theme ornaments for decoration. We have also added stepping stones in the grass, so we don't accidentally step on any turtles that may be hiding in the grass.

Each year Turtle Town looks better as more greenery is added, and decorations are placed, such as river rocks separating grass or bricks from soil, a sandstone bridge to cross the river, more stepping stones, branches to provide more hiding, and refreshed soil.

This may be a desert, but once or twice a year a miracle happens and the snow falls, and if you're even more fortunate it'll stick to the ground and not melt. Lucky for us it snowed twice in 2008, and I got some good picture of how the snow changes the appearance of Turtle Town. Its wet and cold, but still so mystifying to see how a little snow goes a long way to make the outdoors of Las Vegas look just as magical as the indoors.

It's a shame the turtles have to sleep thru the whole thing, and will never get to see the white wonderland that takes place each time they hibernate.
